Recommendations for a diabetics diet:
- Some meal planning tools include the plate method, carbohydrate counting, and hypoglycemic index.
- A healthy diet should include the following food types, in moderation:
- Vegetables
- Whole Grains
- Fruits
- Non-fat Dairy Products
- Beans
- Lean Meats
- Poultry
- Fish
- People with diabetes can still enjoy the same types of food you and i eat, but they have to be careful on the amount they consume. Type 2 diabetes generally have to count carbohydrates and sugar in their meals and take insulin shots when their blood glucose levels are too high. Sometimes they have to eat a more sugary food to boost their levels. They shouldn't eliminate carbohydrates, but should choose nutritional rich carbohydrates (vegetables, Whole grain) over empty ones (sugars, refine grains). Typically diabetics should aim to eat 30-60 grams of carbohydrates per meal, and 15-30 grams per snack. Men and people who have a strict exercise plan can handle a little bit more carbohydrates. Fill 1/2 your plate with no starchy vegetables (carrots, broccoli, and spinach), a 1/4 with lean protein (fish, chicken) and 1/4 with high-fiber starches (brown rice, beans). Add a piece of whole fruit (not fruit juice, which isn't filling and sometimes contains added sugar) add an 8-ounce glass of nonfat or low-fat milk. Foods like cheese can be eaten in small amounts, avoid saturated fats, and sweets occasionally.
